The thermochemical characteristics of the inhibiting action of Na₂SeO₃ on the growth metabolism of four microbes:Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Aerobacter aerogenes and Rhizopus nigricans has been studied by microcalorimetry. It was found that Na₂SeO₃ of concentration less than 10 mg/L had promoting action on the growth of the cells, and that of more than this concentration had inhibiting action, which, in addition, varies with the kinds of the microbes.
