Selective Oxidation of Cyano-Containing p-Nitrophenyl Sulfides

When Mckillop's method was used,oxidation of cyano-containing organic sulfides to the corresponding stilfones with sodium perborate tetrahydrate (NaBO₃·4H₂O) caused the hydrolysis of cyano group. However,with our modified procedure in which the reagent sodium perborate was added in small portions at 55~65℃,sulfones and sulfoxides could be selectively obtained and the cyano group was not touched.
