A series of low molecular weight phenolphthalein epoxy resins (M_n=500~700) have been prepared from phenolphthalein and epichlorohydrin using K₂CO₃(Na₂CO₃)/H₂O as catalvsts instead of NaOH/H₂O.The structures of epoxy resins were characterized by IR and ¹H NMR spectra.Theepoxy value (E),number average molecular weight (M_n),and molecular weight distributions of the resins were also measured.The effects of the molar ratios of monomer,contents of the catalyst and water on the reaction have been examined.The results indicated that the low molecular weight phenolphthalein epoxy resins can be obtained in a wide range of molar ratios among phenolphthalein,epichlorohydrin and the catalyst (K₂CO₃,Na₂CO₃).
