Cationic Copolymerization of α-Pinene and Styrene Initiated by AlCl₃/SbCl₃ Compound Catalyst

The cationic copolymerization of α-pinene and styrene initiated by AlCl₃ alone and AlCl₃/SbCl₃ compound catalyst respectively was investigated.The results showed that, with AlCl₃ alone,the polymerization of α-pinene was rather slow,but the polymerization of styrene was fast.Thus, it was difficult for them to copolymerize because of the significant difference in activity between the two monomers.On the other hand,the activity difference of the two monomers was reduced obviously with AlCl₃/SbCl₃ compound catalyst.This made the copolymerization easier.
