Isospecific Polymerization of Styrene with Rare Earth Catalyst

A rare earth coordination catalyst system:Nd(P₅₀₇)₃-H₂O-Al(i-Bu)₃ was used for isospecific polymerization of styrene. The polymers were extracted with boiling 2-butanone. ¹³C NMR and DSC data indicate that the extracted polystyrene is highly isotactic. The isospecificity is sensitive to the water added in the system. The conversion and isospecificity reach maximums at H₂O/Al(i-Bu)₃ molar ratio of 0.05~0.08.
