ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF Ca, Sr DOPED La₂NiO₄

The solid solutions of La_2-xCa_xNiO₄ (0 ≤x ≤1.4) were prepared and compared with solid solutions of La_2-xSr_xNiO₄. All the members of the system are of tetragonal K₂NiF₄ structure. Their crystal parameters a,c and cell volume were found to be gradually decreased with the increase of x. The electrical resistivity of La_2-xCa_xNiO₄ progressively increases but that of La_2-xSr_xNiO₄ gradually decreases with increasing x at room temperature. The difference in electrical behavior is interpreted in terms of the change of the electronic configuration of Ni³⁺.
