Solid state reactions of metal chlorides (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) with Phenanthroline at room temperature have been studied. A two-step addition reaction was observed. The intermediates M(Phen)₂Cl₂·nH₂O(M=Co,Ni,Cu) were confirmed by experimental results. Effects of molecular structure of the reactants and the stability of the complexes formed were also discussed.
