Syntheses and Fluorescence Properties of Ternary Rare Earth Complexes with 3-Pyridine Carboxylic Acid and Phenanthroline

Fourteen complexes of rare earth with 3-pyridine carboxylic acid(HL) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) have been synthesized. The complexes have the constitution of REL₃·Phen (RE=La,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er,Tm,Yb,Lu,Y) as characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance measurement, IR, UV, ¹H NMR, X-ray powder analysis, TG and DTA techniques. The fluorescence intensities of EuL₃·Phen and TbL₃·Phen were found to be enhanced by introduction of the neutral ligand Phen.
