Study on the Free Radical Graft Copolymerization of Maleic Anhydride onto Poly(β-hydroxybutyrate)

The graft copolymerization of maleic anhydride(MA) onto poly(U-hydro-xybutyrate) (PHB) using benzoyl peroxide as initiator was studied. The effects of polymerization conditions on graft degree,including solvents, monomer and initiator concentrations, reaction temperature and time,were investigated. The best reaction conditions were described. The results showed that graft degree of MA onto PHB could be controlled in the range from 0.3% to 0.85%. The grafted PHB was characterized by ¹³C NMR and chemical titration of MA group.
