Nine E,E-1-(3'-indolyl)-5-(substituted phenyl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one derivatives were synthesized and characterized by MS, ¹H NMR and UV. Five of these compounds(1,3,4,6,7) showed a certain anti-inflammatory activity on mouse ear edema induced by croton oil with the inhibitions being 21.1%, 25.3%, 18.4%, 22.3% and 28.9% respectively (P<0.05 or P<0.01 vs control), at the hypodermic injection dose of 50 mg/kg.
