1,3-Dimethylbenzimidazolium iodide as an available convenient agent has been reacted with a Grignard reagent CH₃(CH₂)₅MgBr to give heptanal. The method need not neccessarily to isolate benzimidazolidine. The reaction mechanism is discussed.
