Synthesis of Liquid Crystals of Laterally Difluorinated Esters

Difluoro-4-alkoxyphenols were prepared from 2,3-difluoro-4-alkoxy bromobenzene with Mg, B(OCH₃)₃ and H₂O₂ at -30℃. Three ester liquid crystal compounds were synthesized by their esterification with 4-(trans-4'-alkylohexyl) compounds. The structures of the liquid crystal compounds were confirmed by IR, ¹H NMR, MS and elemental analysis and the phase transition temperatures were measured by DSC.
