Studies on Preparation of biorenewable PLA/lignin-g-polyester Composites and effect of lignin-g-polyester structures on properties

  • Lignin is often used to modify the bio-based PLA materials because of its good biodegradability, structure stabilization and biomacromolecule nature. However, pure lignin usually has poor compatibility with PLA matrix, which limits its further application. In the present study, in order to increase the compatibility between the lignin and PLA, two different molecule structures of lignin-g-polyester including lignin-g-PDVL-ran-PLLA and lignin-g-PDVL-b-PLLA, were designed and synthesized through ring-opening polymerization of δ-valerolactone (DVL) and L-lactone (L-LA). PDVL acted as a soft part can improve the brittleness of PLA because of its long polymer chain while L-LA can enhance the compatibility between lignin nanofillers and PLA matrix because of the similar structure between L-LA and PLA. By tuning the monomer ratio, a series of PLA/lignin-g-polyester composites with different concentration of as-synthesized two lignin-g-polyesters via solution casting method. Structures of lignin-g-polyester were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) were conducted to observe the distribution of lignin-g-polyester in PLA/lignin-g-polyester composites. FESEM results indicates that the lignin-g-polyester nanofillers can be dispersed evenly in PLA matrix, showing an enhanced compatibility of lignin and PLA. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was utilized to study the thermal and crystallization properties of PLA/lignin-g-polyester composites. The DSC results showed that the added lignin-g-polyester could boost the crystallization behavior and improve the degree of crystallization of PLA. Compared with the lignin-g-PDVL-b-PLLA, the lignin-g-PDVL-ran-PLLA is easier to facilitate the crystallization of PLA. Furthermore, mechanical tests showed that PLA/lignin-g-polyester composites performed better mechanical properties than pure PLA, which is due to multiple effect of the formation of hole and wrinkle between lignin-g-polyester nanofillers and PLA matrix during the stretch. In contrast to the phenomena of DSC test, the mechanical properties of PLA/lignin-g-PDVL-b-PLLA composites are much better than that of PLA/lignin-g-PDVL-ran-PLLA composites. In addition, corresponding UV-shield property indicated that lignin-g-polyester can endow PLA/lignin-g-polyester composites with an excellent UV-shield property.
