Due to their high theoretical energy density, rechargeable Li-O₂ (or Li-air) batteries have attracted extensive attention since they were first proposed in 1996. During the past two decades, researches about Li-O₂ batteries have developed and achieved great progress, Li-O₂ battery is also regarded as one of the next generation energy storage systems. However, there are still many urgent problems to be settled for Li-O₂ batteries, such as the poor cycle performance, instability of electrolyte and security issues of Li anode. So far, researchers have proposed a series of solutions for the main technical problems of Li-O₂ batteries. Herein, relevant technical problems and corresponding research methods about electrode materials, electrolytes and mechanism analysis will be introduced, as well as some unresolved issues and suggestions to the development of Li-O₂ batteries.
