Synthesis, Structure and Growth Mechanism of Magnesium Borate Nanobelts

Magnesium borate nanobelts, a new kind of quasi one-dimensional nanomaterials, has been synthesized by heating mixed powders of crystalline boron and M nanoparticles in the presence of H₂O at 1100 ℃. The produced white sample was characterized by different techniques, such as the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results show that the products are single-crystalline Mg₃B₂O₆Mg3B2O6 nanobelts except some attached Mg₂B₂O₅ particles. The widths of the nanobelts are in the range of 100～200 nm and the lengths are up to several ten micrometers. The growth direction of the nanobelts nears to crystalline Mg₃B₂O₆[010] direction. Finally, the growth mechanism for these novel Mg₃B₂O₆ nanobelts and the effect of reactive temperature on the products have been primarily presented.
