Application of the STEAM Education Concept in General Chemistry Courses: Integrating Chemistry, History, and Art through Systematic Protection and Promotion of Cultural Relics

Cultural relics, as an integral part of cultural and natural heritage, play a significant role in the construction of Chinese-style modernization. Their systematic protection spans multiple disciplines, including chemistry and chemical engineering, materials science, testing and analysis, historical archaeology, and art appreciation. This aligns with the STEAM education philosophy, which emphasizes the interdisciplinary integration of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. This paper focuses on unearthed ceramics, bronze artifacts, and reproduced wall paintings as case studies. Through a teaching model that integrates chemistry, history, and art, students are guided to understand relevant chemical knowledge while engaging in the systematic protection of cultural relics. The approach connects historical knowledge and artistic value embedded in traditional cultural relics, aiming to enhance students’ understanding of Chinese cultural heritage, foster a sense of belonging to Chinese culture, strengthen their confidence in science, technology, and culture, and cultivate comprehensive qualities and abilities.
